In the early 1990s, Sikorsky began development of the Comanche, a stealth helicopter that incorporated advanced automation and fly-by-wire control systems. Following program cancellation in 2004, Sikorsky introduced these technologies to other platforms, including the Blackhawk and commercial S-92 models. Simulator testing and operational experience demonstrated that these displays and systems changed the task of flying, shifting pilots from the role of system operator to system manager. Her positions in both the Crew Stations Integration and Aviation Safety departments gave Noelle a birds eye view of this transition. Noelle shared some research, her observations, and how they might apply to light and experimental aircraft.
You can download a PDF of her presentation here.
One of the topics covered in the presentation was the collision over the Amazon of a private jet and Brazilian airliner. She shared this article with us. There is a Wikipedia article as well.
She also mentioned the crash in Cali, Columbia which was caused by confusion in the cockpit about the functioning of the FMS and then entering the incorrect identifier for the NDB on the approach.
Lots of 99s at the meeting this month.
Fortunately, the rain let up and Noelle made it in from Cayucos.
